Stab vs Cut Protection: What's the Difference?

Two different threats, two different protection strategies.

Many buyers use the terms stab protection and cut protection as if they mean the same thing. They do not. The difference matters because the wrong material can leave you unprotected against the actual threat.

What is cut protection?

Cut protection is designed to resist slicing or abrasion from a blade edge. It is commonly used in industries where the primary risk is accidental cutting rather than direct stabbing force.

  • Work gloves
  • Industrial sleeves
  • Food processing gear
  • Glass handling protection

What is stab protection?

Stab protection is designed to stop concentrated force from a blade tip or pointed weapon. The challenge is penetration, not just surface cutting.

  • Knives
  • Spikes
  • Ice picks
  • Needle-like threats

Why the difference matters

A material can perform well against cutting while still failing under a concentrated stab. For procurement teams, this means the standard and test report must match the real threat environment.

Important: If your users face direct knife or spike attacks, choose a certified stab-resistant product rather than a cut-resistant textile.

ArmorNEX recommendation

For security teams, corrections, and concealed duty wear, ArmorNEX focuses on stab-resistant protection tested to recognized standards such as NIJ 0115.00 and GA 68-2019.
